The Afghan Football Federation (AFF) said on Monday it was in touch with Lionel Messi to organize a meeting between the Barcelona star and a five-year-old boy who became famous for wearing a Argentine player shirt made with a garbage bag .
"We had preliminary contacts with the star of Barcelona, but we do not know where and when the meeting could be held," he told AFP Sayed Ali Kazemi, a spokesman for the AFF.
The image of Murtaza Ahmadi, posing smiling with the trash bag transformed into the Argentina national team shirt with the name of Messi in written back with a pen, went around the world two weeks ago, when his older brother Homayoun, 15 years, posted a video on Facebook.
The AFF contemplates sending the child and his father to Spain or "bring" Lionel Messi to Afghanistan. This second option, however, seems unlikely due to the instability that lives the country, wrapped in an old armed conflict for over 35 years.
In Jaghuri, the city where the family lives of Murtaza, the territory is controlled by Taliban insurgents. The Ahmadi are part of the Hazara minority and belong to Shiite belief, which condemns them to pariah status in a mostly Sunni Afghan society.
Contacted by AFP, the Spanish Embassy in Kabul declared himself "willing to help" Murtaza and his father to travel to Barcelona.
Lionel Messi's father, Jorge, assured AFP on Saturday that his son was "aware" of the Afghan mirim fan and confirmed that the Argentine playmaker wants to "do something" with Murtaza.
